What is the benefit of seeing a Catholic counselor?
The benefit of a Catholic counselor will primarily be to Catholic clients who are seeking counseling that is grounded in the teachings of the Catholic church. A Catholic client should be able to trust that a Catholic therapist will not promote or affirm behaviors and attitudes that conflict with Catholic teachings. A non-Catholic also benefits from the Catholic therapists positively formed view of the human person.
Do I have to be Catholic or Christian to see a Catholic Christian Counselor? Do we have to talk about matters of faith? Will the counselor try to evangelize me to be Catholic?
No. No. And no. It is up to a counselor, as bound by our code of ethics, to respect, honor, and privilege every client's values, and not to impose our own values onto a client.
